Instant Transfer
Gusto
2022

Context
Gusto Wallet users could only move money out of their Gusto Cash Accounts via ACH to a single external bank account that has been verified through Plaid Authentication.
Connecting an external bank account can take 1-2 business days due to micro-deposit validation, and funds move on the ACH timeline (1-3 business days). This means that a user can wait up to 5 days to access their funds.
Role
I was the original designer for Instant Transfers at Gusto, owning the full product experience across web, mobile, the integration with Tabapay, and its connection to Spending Accounts.
Problem
Gusto Wallet users who need quick access to their funds are blocked by a slow, inflexible money movement experience. Transferring money out of a Cash Account can take anywhere from 2-4 business days depending on the transfer type. In the worst case, users wait up to 5 days to access their own money.
This friction drives significant support volume (money movement is the #2 or #3 contact reason) and leaves Gusto without a monetization path for cash transfers. As Gusto Wallet grows, the inability to offer fast, flexible fund movement risks user trust and limits the product's competitiveness in the fintech space.

Collaboration
My PM and I worked closely with the Financial Ops, BSA/AML, Legal, and Partnerships team to gather customer feedback, surface existing limitations within our system, and finalize our partnership with Tabapay.

I laid out the entire instant transfer logic with Tabapay.
Approach
Solution
Picture this: Your Gusto debit card is missing and rent is due tomorrow. Your money is right there in your account — but a 3-5 business day wait makes it effectively out of reach.
Now imagine being the Customer Support agent on the other end of that call. You hear the urgency, you understand the stakes, but all you can offer is: "I'm sorry, the transfer will take 3-5 business days."
Instant transfers was built to close that gap — giving users the immediate access to their money exactly when they need it most, and finally giving support teams an answer worth giving.

Transparency was non-negotiable. User research revealed that during financial emergencies, speed trumps cost — fees were a secondary concern when immediate access to funds was the priority.

Though instant transfers solved an immediate pain point, we wanted to encourage users to sign up for a Gusto Spending account to avoid transfer fees.
